Draw the arrangement before choosing the pieces

Start with the room you have today. Sketch the television, doors, windows and furniture you want to keep, then mark where people enter and walk through. Decide whether your seating should turn a corner, include a chaise or leave an open side for easier access. Use that plan to compare the arrangements shown in this curated modular selection.

Write down the number of people who usually sit together and where each person would sit. A long lounging area, corner and upright seat serve different preferences. If you are still comparing overall shapes, browse the broader Sectional Couches collection before narrowing your plan.

Read the piece list as carefully as the photograph

A piece count describes the components supplied. It does not tell you how many separate sitting positions suit your household. The Solstice 6-Piece Sectional with Chaise, for example, lists a right-arm facing corner chaise, three armless chairs, a storage console and a wedge. The console is one of those six pieces, so compare the actual seating arrangement rather than treating every component as another seat.

For that model, left-arm and right-arm describe the arm position when you face the piece. Check the selected configuration against your floor plan, especially where a chaise approaches a doorway or the open side of the room.

Check which layouts the exact model supports

Ask how the modules sit together and which sides are finished. The Solstice listing specifies finished sides and no connectors, with pieces that can float in the room. Keep that detail attached to the Solstice model; another modular design may use a different connection system or have restrictions on where its components can go.

If you hope to rearrange or expand later, confirm the compatible pieces, orientations and upholstery options before ordering. Similar-looking modules from different ranges are not a verified match. Ask whether additional pieces can be ordered separately and avoid depending on their future availability when planning the seating you need now.

Measure the complete footprint and the way into the room

Request a dimensioned layout for the exact combination you are considering. Mark its outer edges on the floor, including the chaise, wedge or console. Check the space between the seating and nearby tables, the reach to a lamp and the walking route around the arrangement. Open room doors and any relevant storage drawers while checking those clearances.

Measure delivery doorways, hallways and stair turns too. Separate modules still need to pass through the route to your room. Ask for the delivery dimensions of the largest pieces and confirm any assembly requirements rather than assuming every component will fit through a narrow entrance.

Compare the complete order, then bring your plan

Put each candidate on a short list with its full piece list, dimensions, upholstery and current selected price. Check whether a console or other pictured component is included. Ask for care instructions, delivery and setup charges for your address, and the applicable return and warranty terms. Compare complete arrangements that meet the same seating needs.

Bring that list and your room sketch to family-owned AK Furniture and Mattresses at 2033 28th St SW, Wyoming, MI 49519, near Grand Rapids. The store is open daily, 10 am to 6 pm. Call (616) 202-3674 to ask about current options and showroom displays.

Does a six-piece sectional seat six people?

Check the component list and usable sitting positions. A console or other non-seating component may count as a piece. Compare the layout with the number of people you want to seat.

Do all modular sectionals connect the same way?

No. Verify the exact model’s connection method, finished sides and permitted arrangements. The Solstice example has finished sides and no connectors; that specification does not apply to every modular sectional.

Can I add matching modules later?

Ask about compatible pieces and current ordering options. Future availability, matching upholstery and compatibility should be checked before relying on a later addition.
